Iowa Writers Workshop
I realize I haven’t posted about my experience at the Iowa Writers Workshop. If any of you are inclined to write fiction, non-fiction or poetry, please consider a trip to Iowa City next summer for the Iowa Writers Workshop.
First, Iowa City is a great small town, clean as a whistle and very kind to writers (free coffee at one place if you wore your writer’s badge from workshop). Here’s how each day looked: prior to 11 am you are on your own to write; at 11 am there is a workshop for everyone. My favorite topic was “octopus” writing (giving your writing reach) by adding the past or the future in the middle of your character’s action. Great idea!
Then at noon, we were launched into the tiny town around the university to have lunch and there were many restaurants there to accommodate us. Noon to 2 pm consisted of downloading your writing woes or challenges to fellow writers or picking their brains for ideas.
From 2-5 each day we were in small classes with lots of writing opportunities. My classmates were a wonderful source of inspiration. Our writing samples were shared with one another and after some initial trepidation we all got used to the idea of reading in front of others.
I loved being in the friendly atmosphere of U of I and would go again, and again. Hope I see you there!
